Uterine prolapse has not been known to specifically cause sciatica, but keep reading. There may be a relationship.
Sciatica causes pain down the path of the sciatic nerve. Patients with sciatica experience symptoms such as low back pain, pain down one or both legs, and buttock pain. The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disk or bone spur compression of the nerves. While uterine prolapse does not cause sciatica, it may aggravate the condition if you already have sciatica.
High tone pelvic floor dysfunction can be associated sciatica and many women with this condition often feel a similar pressure as that described by women with pelvic organ prolapse. High tone pelvic floor dysfunction is essentially “pelvic muscle spasms.”
Depending on an individual’s anatomy, a spasm in one or more pelvic muscles (most commonly the piriformis muscle) can aggravate the sciatic nerve causing pain.
